What is Futureworks Shops?

Futureworks Shops is New York City’s collaborative network of prototyping and innovation spaces where hardware startups turn their ideas into reality. All throughout 2019, you can access subsidized and discounted workspace, machinery and consulting expertise throughout the city. From studio space at NYDesigns in Long Island City, to CNC expertise at Supersmith in Red Hook, it’s all here. Futureworks Shops also introduces the Futureworks Shops R&D Fellowship, a pilot program that prepares aspiring engineers for jobs at hardware startups. Futureworks Shops is brought to you by Brooklyn-based SecondMuse and NYCEDC, and is part of Futureworks NYC, a key component of the City’s Industrial Action Plan that helps local hardware startups and manufacturers increase production here in New York.

A/D/O

Brooklyn

A/D/O is a creative space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn dedicated to exploring new boundaries in design. At its heart is the Design Academy, which offers a range of programming to professional designers, intended to provoke and invigorate their creative practice. A/D/O is located in a 23,000 square foot former warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s Industrial Business Zone. It has been converted into a space for creative exchange, with both public workspaces and desks for rent. It offers free hotdesking plus an application-based coworking area with desks for 24 members (including unlimited access to the workshop). Founded in 2017.

Bronx Innovation Factory

The Bronx

MIT CoLab, CommonWise Education and a half-dozen local partners are teaming up to build the Bronx’s first makerspace. Bronx Innovation Factory is a pilot that will provide the borough with free access to digital fabrication facilities, startup and product-design workshops and workforce training. This pilot will inform the development of a larger freestanding facility. Bronx Innovation Factory’s mission is to increase wealth and ownership among Bronx residents. Founded in 2017.

Collab gives innovators and creative entrepreneurs access to prototyping and digital fabrication equipment in the heart of Brooklyn as well as the mentoring and space to build their ideas. Collab offers 24/7 open-access space, permanent desks for entrepreneurs and private studios for companies. Members can reserve space for events, classes and seminars. Collab has been able to generate millions in revenue for itself and its members by creating products and installations for its corporate clients such as Hearst, L’Oreal, Intel and the UN. The collective has helped launch more than ten companies with a combined valuation of $200 million+, creating more than 250 new jobs. Founded in 2009.

Craftsman Ave

Craftsman Ave is a creative community where artists, designers, engineers, and makers come together to work, teach, and learn. Their 1500 sqft studio includes co-working space and tools for woodworking, metalworking and more. Since opening in 2015, Craftsman Ave has taught more than a thousand students everything from product design to knife making and six of their instructors were awarded Best Instructors by CourseHorse in 2016. Membership starts at $500/month and comes with a small, tight-knit community, 24 hour access to the shop, roof access to the building, a business address and mailbox, and paid teaching opportunities. Craftsman Ave provides a beautiful, functional work space for members and an inspiring classroom for students.

NEW INC serves a community of nearly 100 creative practitioners and entrepreneurs annually, working on a range of for-profit and nonprofit ventures across art, design and technology. Founded in 2014. NEW INC offers 8,000 sq-ft of office space and meeting rooms next door to New Museum. Membership includes conference room bookings, printing, educational programming, and shared equipment. Full-time membership is a 12-month commitment with 24/7 access to the facilities, a dedicated desk space, locker, and eligibility for their mentorship program. NYDesigns is dedicated to the success of design and hardware tech startups in NYC. Companies in their incubator get three years of private studio space and access to a network of mentors and advisers. NYDesigns has studio space as well as 12 coworking desks and a 5,000-sq-ft fabrication lab where startups can prototype their design ideas. Individual members get access as well as five hours of laser cutting. They also produce events and programs for a thriving community of creators and innovators.
